Mayor's Corner by Carl Bode

I have started a weekly standing meeting with the city employees which are held on Monday mornings at 7:30. These meetings are intended to run for only 20 minutes out of respect for their time. The purpose of these meetings is to coordinate and communicate so we are all on the same page and better able to do our jobs. I have trust and confidence in our city employees. They are the experts in what they are doing so I am not going to tell them how to do their jobs. My role is to set the tone and direction.

Speaking of setting the tone and direction, I am not aware of our municipality having any sort of Mission, Vision, or Values statements. Here is what I offer until such time as the rest of the city council and our city employees have their input.
Our Mission: to serve our community with exceptional quality municipal services.
Our Vision: to enhance our community as an attractive place to live and work.
Our Values: to treat each other with dignity and respect.
The Mission statement is the purpose for the organization. The emphasis is upon serving and bring our best to the community each and every day.

The Vision statement is our guide on what we aim to achieve. The emphasis is upon enhancing. Whatever we do, have we made it better than it was before?

The Vision statement adds "an attractive place to live." What are we doing to make this a great place to raise a family? How do we keep our community safe? How do we make our town appealing, attractive, welcome, and inviting?

The Vision statement adds "an attractive place to work." We have many wonderful businesses in town. We have great potential with our location along I-90, Hwy 281, and the railroad. What are the things we can do to help each business prosper and grow? What can we do to attract people to bring their business here?

The Values statement is our core principles. We each deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. The city employees should expect that from each other as they work together. The city employees should also treat each and every member of the community with dignity and respect in all of their interactions with the public.

I am proud to partner with every one of our city employees and know they will continue to do a great job. With regret, Kylee Urban has announced that her last day will be effective February 21. We are sad to see her go and wish her all the best.

Kind regards,
Carl Bode
